  • 2 tbsp black cocoa powder imparting a deep, rich flavor and color
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder enhancing the chocolate notes
  • 1 tsp baking powder giving the cake its lift
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda ensuring a tender texture
  • 1/2 tsp salt to balance the flavors

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar adding sweetness and moisture
  • 1 cup buttermilk infusing richness and tang
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened to a creamy perfection
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil ensuring a moist crumb
  • 2 large eggs binding ingredients together for stability
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar reacting with the baking soda for extra fluffiness
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract adding a hint of warmth
  • black food coloring (gel or paste) for that stunning dark hue

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch cake pans by greasing them lightly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, black cocoa powder, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Mix in the buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and vinegar until smooth.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  • Add the black food coloring to achieve your desired color.

Baking

  • Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  • Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick; it should come out clean.

Cooling

  • Allow the cakes to cool completely before frosting.

Notes

For best results, ensure your butter is soft but not melting. Avoid overmixing your batter once the dry ingredients are added.
