Preparation

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, stirring occasionally for about 5-7 minutes.
  • Drain any excess fat from the pan to keep the dish smooth and flavorful.
  • Transfer the browned beef to your slow cooker. Add the finely chopped onion, green bell pepper (if using), and minced garlic.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, mustard, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika (if using).
  • Pour the sauce over the beef and vegetables in the slow cooker and stir well.

Cooking

  • Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 4–6 hours or high for 2–3 hours.
  • Once cooking time is up, stir the mixture gently. Spoon the mixture onto warm hamburger buns.
  • Consider topping with pickles or cheese.

Notes

For a healthier twist, consider using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef. You can also skip the brown sugar and replace it with honey or maple syrup. Additionally, incorporating grated zucchini or carrots can add nutrients without altering the taste significantly.
