  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar Adds sweetness to the dough.
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast Essential for the magical rise.
  • 1 cup warm milk Creamy and inviting, it helps activate the yeast.
  • 0.25 cup unsalted butter, melted Lends a rich, buttery flavor.
  • 2 large eggs Provides structure and richness.
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt Balances the sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Aromatic with a comforting essence.
  • Vegetable oil (for frying) Ensures that crispy, golden exterior.

For Coating

  • 1 cup granulated sugar The sweet finishing touch.

Instructions

Activating the Yeast

  • In a small bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Preparing the Dough

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk flour, sugar, and salt together.
  • Pour in melted butter, eggs, and the activated yeast mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.

Kneading the Dough

  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.

First Rise

  • Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm spot for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.

Shaping the Donuts

  • Roll out the dough to about ½-inch thickness.
  • Use a heart-shaped cutter to cut out the donuts, placing each piece on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Second Rise

  • Cover the shaped donuts lightly with a cloth and allow them to rise again for another 30 minutes.

Frying the Donuts

  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the donuts in batches for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Remove them and drain on paper towels.

Coating the Sugar

  • While warm, roll each donut in granulated sugar until they are fully coated.

Notes

Ensure your yeast is fresh and active. Measure ingredients precisely and maintain the right oil temperature for frying. For healthier alternatives, substitute whole wheat flour for half of the all-purpose flour, reduce sugar gradually, or try coconut oil instead of butter.
