Preparation

  • Combine panko breadcrumbs with whole milk in a large mixing bowl and let sit for 5 minutes.
  • Add ground beef, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, grated onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika.
  • Gently mix until just combined; shape into 4-6 equal-sized patties.

Cooking

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat, then place patties in the skillet.
  • Cook each side for about 4-5 minutes until golden brown; transfer to a plate and cover with foil.

Gravy Preparation

  • In the same skillet, melt butter, and add sliced onions; sauté until soft and caramelized.
  • Add sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture, then stir in minced garlic.

Thickening the Gravy

  • Sprinkle flour over the sautéed vegetables and stir for 2 minutes.
  • Gradually whisk in beef broth, adding Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and black pepper.
  • Simmer until the gravy thickens.

Final Assembly

  • Return cooked patties to the skillet and let simmer for 8-10 minutes.
  • Stir in heavy cream just before serving.
  • Plate the patties and ladle gravy over each one, garnished with parsley.

Notes

For a lighter option, use ground turkey or chicken and whole wheat or gluten-free breadcrumbs. Adding grated carrots or spinach enhances nutrition.
